Tourist Attractions

Krishna's Butterball

A massive natural rock balancing precariously on a small base, Krishna's Butterball is a marvel of nature. The rock is named after Lord Krishna, who is said to have lifted a similar rock with his little finger.

Arjuna's Penance

This vast open-air bas-relief is one of the largest in the world. It depicts various scenes from Hindu mythology, including the story of Arjuna, a Pandava prince, performing penance to obtain the celestial weapon from Lord Shiva.

Shore Temple

Standing defiantly against the waves, the Shore Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most iconic landmark of Mahabalipuram. Carved from granite in the 8th century, the temple complex is a stunning example of Dravidian architecture.

Five Rathas

A group of five monolithic structures, the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots) are chariot-shaped temples that were never completed. Each Ratha is carved from a single massive block of granite and is dedicated to a different Pandava brother from the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
